OUR JOURNEY

We had bought some property and started a small hobby farm that included adding a handful of hens to the family. One day while donating some dog food to our local animal shelter, they gifted me a handsome rooster we named "Cogburn". He really liked the hens, and they all got along great and he was very protective of them.  Before we knew it, we had a broody hen who eventually, for reasons unknown, abandoned her eggs after a while so we bought an incubator and put her eggs in it not knowing for sure if there were actually any chicks in the eggs. To our amazement all of them eventually hatched... except one. I was frustrated because I did not have a good light to candle the egg to see if there was a live chick inside or if it had passed away or if it was simply an unfertilized egg. I did not know much about the process of incubation and was learning on the go. We waited an extra week just hoping and praying that the egg was ok and wasn't bad and going to explode because I had read awful things about that actually happening sometimes. While waiting I was thinking of what I would really want in an egg candling light and how to make that "dream light" a reality... all because the ones that we tried were not very well made, weak, gimmicky or way to hot endangering the chicks and very frustrating with cords or batteries that would wear down fast.

When the chick in the egg finally "pipped" we were all so excited!  It had survived! It turned out to be a "needy" little rooster with splayed legs and a big attitude. We named him "Doodles" because despite it all he learned to walk, starting with a cute little "waddling doodle" all around (that is the best I can describe his little walk.)

He needed a lot of extra love and attention and grew to become the angriest rooster we have ever known. (Maybe a bit spoiled) He was so funny and a joy despite his temper and that is how the name of our business and product was decided.
